One of the words often associated with the phrase, “New Wave” is holistic. It follows that New Wave Home Care takes a holistic approach to senior health care. As part of our efforts to be an integral part of the community, we treat the environment as integral to our service. Speaking externally, global warming has given rise to more frequent and hotter fires burning, which puts everyone at risk, and seniors more so. However, the weather is only one aspect of our environment. We have the indoors to consider as well.

As the chemical levels in our society increase, our homes and our immune systems are susceptible to the buildup. Naturally, our resistance decreases as we age. In the home, HVAC systems can not only be a source of comfort, but also a source of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), some of which may adversely affect our health, both in the short- and long-term. VOCs are also found in the ingredients of thousands of household products.

Many cleaning, disinfecting, and degreasing products all contain organic solvents, as do cosmetics, paints, varnishes, wax, and hobby products. VOCs are released both in usage and to a lesser degree while in storage. Ironically, as we clean our homes, we are also polluting them. It’s easy to overlook these invisible health risks since they exist as part of our normal day-to-day routines, and isolated use of these products doesn’t appear to affect us. However, it’s the accumulation of VOCs and their effects that concern New Wave Home Care.

To help mitigate these conditions in hopes of creating a safer indoor and outdoor environment, New Wave Home Care is actively involved with California’s Environmental Defense Fund. Our involvement includes donations to the EDF, as well as outreach to local, state, and federal officials to actively encourage them to take action on these crucial environmental and chemical issues.

In recognition of our ongoing efforts to act as stewards of our environment, New Wave Home Care’s founder, Santhosh “Sam” Gopinathan was recently honored with The Environmental Defense Fund’s Certificate of Appreciation. Of course, while it is nice to be recognized by our peers, the important thing is that the work be done.
